Leisure Courses

To meet the varying needs of leisure sailors and motor boaters we offer a wide range of shore based courses accredited by the RYA and the MCA as well as courses developed in-house.

RYA Navigation Courses progress in complexity depending on the level of experience you have:

Beginner
RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship – This course covers basic navigation, tides, weather and safety and can be completed as a two day classroom based course or online.

Beginner - Intermediate
RYA Day Skipper Theory – this five day course is for those who have some practical experience and are considering owning their own boat or wish to charter a boat but have little or no navigation experience or who just want to be a more valuable crew member.

Intermediate
RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory - the more advanced course if you have practical and navigation experience and wish to go further afield, progress onto the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore practical certificates or just to improve your navigation and seamanship skills.

Advanced
RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory - this is an advanced course designed for those who wish to go blue water sailing. It requires knowledge equivalent to the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory.

If you are not sure which navigation course is right for you, click here to view the RYA training Ladder or call us on 01243 432485.

Support Courses

We also offer ancillary courses including:

RYA VHF SRC Radio Course (It is a legal requirement for one person on board to have completed this course if you have a VHF radio on board including a handheld), RYA Diesel Engine CourseRYA First Aid Course and RYA Radar Course. In addition we offer an in-house developed introduction to boat electrics course which has proven very popular.

The MCA courses we offer were originally introduced for crew working on commercial vessels such as wind farm support vessels or superyachts but we have found that they are being taken up by leisure sailors who would like to be more independent, particularly the MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC) a four day course with a large practical element where you learn to strip down and rebuild a variety of marine engines.

It can be difficult deciding which course to take or the order in which to take them so if you are unsure, please read our Which Course page or call us on 01243 432485
